Ask how long a bean-to-cup machine lasts and you will be given an average, and the average is useless. It is two separate populations. One group's machine dies between the second month and the fifteenth. The middle two rows are where the money is. Two of the sharpest failures in the whole record land there: a Café Affetto control board that, in its owner's words, glitched out just a few months after the year warranty expired, and a second Affetto whose spout clogged and sprayed at fifteen months on filtered water and on-schedule descaling. Rubber kills more machines than anything else
If you take one mechanical fact from this page, take this one. The component most likely to end your machine's working life is a seal you cannot see and did not know existed, and it costs a few dollars.
The most-watched teardown of a Philips super-automatic names the single most common fault on that platform outright: worn O-rings on the water inlet nozzle, where the seal to the brew group perishes, water sprays inside the chassis and ends up in the drip tray instead of the cup, and the whole nozzle is a two-screw part. That is exactly the symptom Philips owners describe as the machine dying: brown water arriving in the tray, a strained noise as the brew group returns, and a cup that half fills. It reads like the end of a machine and it is a consumable.
The same story repeats on other platforms with different part names. A teardown of Breville's dual boiler traced a leak to the port where the steam boiler feeds the brew boiler, with calcium residue built up from years of sputtering and thinner-walled O-rings that had cracked and aged badly; two sizes cover most of the machine. An experienced Breville owner's advice for a three-year-old machine is to take the top cover off periodically and look for signs of water, because a weep becomes a drip onto electrical components. Espresso Den does not publish prices, because they move. But repair quotes are worth reporting as owners received them, because the pattern in them is more useful than any single figure: repair cost tracks the machine's original price far more closely than it tracks the size of the fault.

Two things fall out of that table. The first is that a repair which costs a large fraction of a replacement is not really a repair decision, it is a replacement decision, and the higher the machine's price the more likely you are to be quoted one. The second is that the cheapest outcomes by an enormous margin belong to the people who opened the machine themselves, and whether that option exists is a property of the machine rather than of your courage.

Look again at the failure calendar and then at what covers it, because the mismatch is systematic. Gaggia sells the Brera with one year handled directly by the manufacturer. De'Longhi gives two, extended to three if you register the machine, which takes a few minutes and which owners tell each other about because the company does not shout about it. Breville's certified remanufactured machines carry six months. A renewed De'Longhi or Philips listing typically carries ninety days.
Ninety days does not reach the leak window. Six months barely reaches it. One year lands almost exactly where the electronics cluster sits, which is why the Café Affetto owner whose board failed just past twelve months, and the Philips owner whose machine stopped at eight months, feel so differently about the same brand. - Dip the test strip on day one and set the water hardness to what it actually says, then take the descale prompt seriously when it comes.
- Pull the brew group out weekly, rinse it under warm water with no detergent, and let it dry properly before it goes back.
- Grease the brew group rails on the manufacturer's schedule, because a stiff brew group is how an Americano stops working and how a puck stops compressing.
- Wash the milk carafe or purge the milk line every single day it is used, and do not leave milk sitting in a fridge-stored container all week.
- Keep dark oily beans out of the hopper, because a clogged chute on a sealed machine is a service visit rather than a wipe.
- Empty the grounds bin and the drip tray before they demand it, and wipe out the cavity underneath where grounds and condensation collect.
- Pull the machine forward once a month and look underneath and behind it for water, because internal leaks reach the counter before they reach the drip tray.
- If your machine has a service or product counter, read it occasionally, since a rising calcium reading or a drifting shot count tells you what is coming.
So what should you actually expect
For a mainstream bean-to-cup machine from De'Longhi, Philips, Jura, Bosch or KitchenAid, treated properly and fed sensible water, five to ten years is a fair expectation and beyond that is common rather than exceptional. Somewhere in that span you should expect one intervention, most likely a set of seals or a valve, and whether that intervention costs a few dollars or a few hundred is decided by the machine you chose rather than by the fault.
